Look who finally made it to their first Canada Day celebration—me and my family! As many of you know (and if not, now you do!), I love celebrating milestones, no matter how small. Though we’ve been in Canada for over a year now, we missed our first Canada Day back in July 2018 because we’d just arrived at the time and were still adjusting. But this year, my husband and I planned ahead, excited to join in the festivities.
What is Canada Day?
For anyone wondering, Canada Day is celebrated every year on July 1st. It’s a national holiday marking the anniversary of Confederation in 1867 when the British North America Act took effect. Formerly known as Dominion Day, it was renamed Canada Day in 1982 (thanks to The Canadian Encyclopedia for this nugget)
I had to come fully kitted for the Day😜 |
In Calgary, Canada Day is filled with events for all ages. I did a little research on the City of Calgary website and found a great lineup of family-friendly activities. We decided on Eau Claire Park downtown, located along the Bow River, across from Prince’s Island Park. Eau Claire had so much to offer—face painting, live entertainment, a petting zoo, free ice cream, an artisan market, and more. We planned to enjoy the activities there and then head over to Prince’s Island Park for a mini family picnic.
Getting Ready for the Day
We packed a picnic bag with cold drinks, snacks, and goodies for Teni and left the house around 10:15 am to catch the bus and train. After a quick 9-minute walk from 1st Street train station, we arrived at Eau Claire Park just as the event started. The weather was sunny, perfect for all my picture shenanigans moments (you know I had to take a bunch of pictures 📸)! I even showed my family where my office was located, which is only a few minutes walk from Prince’s Island Park btw.

Celebrating Canada Day with Little My Miss Independent
As soon as we arrived, it was clear Teni had her own agenda—running around! She’s fully embracing #ToddlerLife, so we took turns chasing her through the events. We watched a live band, explored the artisan market, and visited the petting zoo, where Teni got to feed goats and pigs (definitely a highlight for her). We even got some fun face painting done!

After walking around Eau Claire, we crossed the long bridge to Prince’s Island Park, where we found a nice spot to relax, eat, and enjoy the rest of the day.

Wrapping Up an Amazing First Canada Day
Even though we couldn’t make it to some of the later events, like the Max Bell Centre block party or the 11 pm fireworks (thanks to #MomLife), I was so happy to celebrate with my family. Seeing Teni have the time of her life made it all worth it.
We really don't need to ask Teni if she had fun or not. Obviously, she did have a LOT of fun🤣 |
